TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?

I am an urban fiction author and I own a non-medical home care agency in Cincinnati, Ohio called Cherishing Lives Home Care Agency. With the Home Care Agency, we serve individuals mainly elderly people who are in need of care. Some of the care that we do is companionship, light housekeeping, running errands, cooking, outings, hospice care and more.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?

I started writing back in 2014 when I was going through some personal things within my home. I figured that I’m not the only one who is going through hard times. I decided to be a voice and put my problems into a novel. That’s when I wrote my first book. The Devil Was Once An Angel (I’ll be re-releasing it this November)
My partner and I decided to open up a Non-medical Home Care Agency because she works in a hospital and she sees how the aides come in with the clients and they’re not hands on. I actually worked as an aide before and I didn’t like the things I would see or how aides talked to the clients. I went to my partner and we wrote out a business plan to open up a non-medical home care agency that would allow clients to get care where ever they considered home. Unlike other agencies, our clients are our number one priority. We have a seven-tier hiring process to make sure our clients receive the best care.

WHAT WHERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?

Before writing I was a stay at home mom in Atlanta, Georgia and Before the Home Care Agency I had moved back to Ohio and started working in a Nursing Home.

WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?

Always stay focus. Work towards your goals every day because no one can complete them but you. You can do anything you want in life. God put everyone here for a purpose. If he has given you a vision, you need to fulfil that vision. Whenever you ignore his calling he will keep making it reappear until you act on it. I was always told when you have a vision or an idea you have 24 – hours to act on it or you never will. Stop procrastinating.

MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW I DEALT WITH IT

My greatest obstacle was becoming a people person. I never really talk. I’m more of an observer. I’m very quiet. I had to learn to part my lips and keep my head high to let people know how serious I am. Close lips will never be heard!

MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT

Letting my kids see what mommy does. My kids being proud that I wrote a book and that I have a company that helps people. They brag on me so much it’s unbelievable. My wow moment is when my daughter when to a book event with me and she talked a lot of people into buying my book. That’s the hustle in my leading her on.

DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN… WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?

Yes, I did wrote a business plan for my home care agency. Somethings that we add into the business plan stays and somethings we had to reroute because it didn’t work for us.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMEN BUSINESS OWNER?

As a black woman sometimes it is very hard getting past the front desk. But as a black woman, I would never give up until I get past the front desk. I’ll keep showing up until I’m lead to the back. I fill like we still like in a society that no matter what you do they will always make it hard for you.

A Notebook

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…
