TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?

I am a Postnatal Fitness & Lifestyle Coach. I help women transition into motherhood holistically by restoring and transforming the body, mind, and soul.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?

I came up with my business idea from my own personal experiences with pregnancy and early postpartum recovery. My business is made up of all the tools and support I wish I had as a new mom.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?

I’m a certified personal trainer, as well as a certified pre- and postnatal exercise specialist. I have been working as a trainer and teaching semi-private classes at gyms in my area. This is my first business! I have grown so much as a trainer and as an individual and gained so much valuable experience. I’m so excited to take my knowledge and experience to the next level.

WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?

For me, doing a lot of inner reflection and mindset work has been crucial. You’ve got to remove anything that brings negativity into your life. As an entrepreneur, YOU are your business and what you put out is what you’ll receive. find out what’s causing those negative beliefs and replace them with powerful, positive beliefs. Not everyone will get it, so you’ve got to be ok with that. You may need to distance yourself from certain people while you build your strong foundations. Another piece of advice- don’t dull your sparkle for fear of making someone uncomfortable. SHINE BABY SHINE!

MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW I DEALT WITH IT:

Limiting beliefs! Oh my goodness, it’s amazing how many negative things we think about ourselves and our lives without even realizing it. I have never been a big fan of journaling, but writing all my fears and doubts down on paper, and dissecting them to see where they stemmed from really opened my eyes and allowed me to rewrite those old beliefs into new ones that align with where I want to go. Now I journal just about every day, even if it looks like chicken scratch because it really works.

MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:

Pushing past my fears and the judgements of others in charting my own path. To sticking to what I believe in and never giving up. If one way doesn’t work, I always find another.

HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:

Rather than a static scale with equal weight on either side, I think of work/life balance as walking on a tightrope. I don’t think there is an even sliced ratio of work and life, but rather finding the amount of each that brings a sense of peace and fulfilment to my life. Some weeks I feel like my work schedule is extra demanding, so instead of going out for girls’ night or hitting a workout class, I’ll unwind at home with my family. Other weeks, I’ve had lots of fun events, so I take a break from my social life and pour more of myself into my business. I’m just continuously walking along my rope and leaning whichever way I need to in order to find my sense of balance and calm.

I AM INSPIRED BY:

Nature. Other powerful female entrepreneurs doing their thang and shining brightly. Myself! Sometimes the best inspiration is to look back at how far you’ve actually come and realized that, dang you are really amazing!

WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:

I feel like women face such immense pressure to look and be a certain way after having a baby. I mean, the body goes through HUGE physical trauma not to mention all the hormonal and emotional changes, sleep deprivation,  and suddenly responsible for another life. And we’ve been conditioned to have these unrealistic expectations of ourselves and our bodies to just bounce back and have it figured out right away.
I want to change the image of postpartum health from a place of lack (I’m not ___enough, I need to ___) to come from a place of self-love, acceptance, and gratitude towards one’s body.

HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:

I prepare for success with constant mindset work. I start with visualizing my success and really feeling what it feels like to have achieved my goal. Then I step into action. When you can actually feel your success as if it’s already happened, you’ll find yourself working to bring it to fruition. I make conscious efforts to ask myself if what I’m doing is aligned with my goals or not.

DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?

Sort of. I made two separate lists: Lifestyle and Business. For each, I wrote out what my ultimate dreams looked like. If there were zero limitations if I could have/be/do anything ever that I wanted… That’s what I wrote down. Then I broke those up into smaller chunks of what I want to see in a year, 6 months, and 3 months. It was effective in that it opened my eyes to things that I didn’t know I actually wanted in my life, and now I have a clear picture of where I am headed. It’s helpful for me to review it often, and to remain flexible as goals may change as we develop and grow.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMAN BUSINESS OWNER?

I believe there are many advantages to being a woman business owner. Women are creative, nurturing, and great at taking on multiple tasks (especially if a woman is a mother!), all of which I believe to be necessary traits in running a successful business. We also tend to be more in touch with our emotions which is so important to truly connect with our clients. While there are disadvantages of being a woman in business, I feel that there have been many positive shifts in recent years towards eliminating those disadvantages and creating more equality for men and women as business owners. More and more women are making a stand and taking control of their lives and businesses. It’s so awesome to see!

MY FAVOURITE BUSINESS TOOL IS…

Google Docs! It’s so easy to use for “brain dumps,” content ideas, and for sending documents to clients. I also use it a lot for collaborating as it’s accessible from just about every device.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…

Figure out exactly what you want. Make the decision to get it and commit to that decision. Feel it as if it’s already happened and stop bartering with yourself. If you want X, don’t say, “but I’d be happy with Y.” Go for X!
