TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?
My current business is P.O.W.E.R. Academic Strength and Conditioning, an education based company. We provided both private and small group tutoring, online tutoring, supplemental educational resources, and YouTube crash course videos.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?
I saw a need for relationship building, focused attention on specific resources for learners, and focused attention on Social and Emotional Learning.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?
I’ve been a teacher for seven years, and I’m currently a Math Specialist in APS
WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?
START! Don’t delay. Make connections with people who have done what you want to do, research and learn all you can… and then research and learn more! Entrepreneurship takes a great deal of work and attention to detail. You have to know what you are taking on.
MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW I DEALT WITH IT:
Thankfully, I haven’t had any obstacles that have been detrimental to business. However, I am currently looking for a space to hold a summer camp and that has been a frustrating ordeal thus far.
MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:
There hasn’t been a single proudest accomplishment… I feel overwhelmingly proud when my learners call/text to tell me that did well on a test or they have the understanding of a skill or concept we’ve been working on. I’m proud when they are willing to take risks in their education and understand the work they have to put in to reach their goals.
HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:
I set timers to try and stay true to life obligations and business obligations. I don’t want to look back and realize I’ve missed too many moments because I was working on the business. The business IS incredibly important to me but so is my mental well being.
I AM INSPIRED BY:
Kids who deserve a quality education.
WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:
I love learning. I love teaching. I love giving learners the POWER to realize and to advocate for the education they deserve.
HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:
I read. A lot. I stay abreast of best practices. I listen to what my learners are interested in and what motivates them to know how to best educate them. And I learn from my mistakes and the mistakes of others. I ask a ton of questions. Most people have been very willing to share their knowledge.
DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?
I didn’t write the traditional business plan. I’m more of a bulleted list type of person! I did create a vision and mission and I refer to them often to make sure I’m operating the way I intended to when I first began. As we grow I’ll continue to revisit and make any changes that are necessary to continue on the trajectory we want.
ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMEN BUSINESS OWNER?
I have recently started the process of being recognized as a small businesswoman owner. In my day to day operations, I have not found it to be advantageous or disadvantageous being a woman business owner.
MY FAVOURITE BUSINESS TOOL IS…
My Mac! I absolutely need Keynote, Final Cut Pro, and Logic.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…
Stay in your lane. You will reach the kids you are supposed to reach.
