TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?
The current business I am in is the Natural Hair Business. I create my products at home.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?
I was at a point in my life where I had to choose what I wanted to do with no income coming in and I was out of side hustles.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?
My hair business is my first business. Before this, I was a Housekeeper making $9.50 hr. It wasn’t working for me anymore. I couldn’t keep it or see it as a future job or career.
WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?
Have a plan. Save up and do everything in order. Don’t jump right in because you will find yourself stuck. Do a lot of research.
MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW I DEALT WITH IT:
When I was in high school, I wanted to be a Fashion Designer. I was always told, “That’s for people with a ‘gift’.” And when I heard negativity like that, I gave in thinking they were right. But that was the issue, I was always told I couldn’t do something or that I didn’t have that ‘gift’. I overcame this by believing in myself. Support or no support, I can do this.
MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:
Starting my own and first business with minimal support, and a little bit of money. I did it and I am Still going.
HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:
It is very hard to have a business, college, home life and work. Blending those I try to stay on a schedule. Me, I like to write things down and pin it on my mirror as like checkboxes. It helps a lot. Trying to create the life I want is also hard because I can’t rush my adult life. I have to take a step at a time with everything I do.
I AM INSPIRED BY:
My inspiration is TheChicNatural on YouTube. I look up to her as an inspiration because she kind of has the lifestyle I would like to have. A girl can dream lol. But she’s very stylish and original.
WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:
I chose this career because us as black women in the hair industry, it is booming!! And we love our hair, we change it everyday lol. Me, my sisters and my mom struggle with our hair. So it came to me, ‘make these products, not only for the family but for every sister and mother struggling with their natural hair’.
HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:
Pray. Take one day at a time. Remain patient and know that God has a plan for me, he’s not finished with me yet. Or anyone. I put all my ducks in a row so I don’t fall flat on my face later.
DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?
Yes, I just made my business plan. And budgeting for my business is the most effective tool for me.
