TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?
I am a milliner (I make hats).
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?
I started out by taking a variety of different classes at FIT. I began with sewing, mainly tailoring as I didn’t know how to use a machine at first. After a while, moving toward accessories, I started working on making handbags and jewellery, before eventually landing on hat making.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?
After graduating college, I worked on Wall Street for a few years before moving on to digital media and advertising (also know as adtech space). While it was definitely more stimulating than working for a bank I still found myself lacking an outlet for my creativity. I started taking different classes and exploring; for a long time, I was immersed in photography which I still love a lot, and has helped me hone by stylistic eye.
WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?
Everything is a journey. Just because you don’t know what you might want to do now, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try. Take classes, travel, learn something new and through this journey, you will definitely come to your business or passion.
MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW I DEALT WITH IT:
Self Doubt. As the creative arm of my business, I always worry about the likability and usability of what I make, will people like it? Will someone wear it? I don’t want to be too mainstream and sacrifice my authenticity, but on the other hand, I understand that my work needs to have mass market appeal, otherwise it won’t really scale.
MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:
Registering my business, getting QuickBooks and most importantly making my first sale.
HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:
Prioritize, Balance and Organize.
I AM INSPIRED BY:
WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:
HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:
Keep learning and pushing forward.
DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN?
No, I did n’t. While I know ppl say it’s needed, I don’t think I am there yet.
ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMEN BUSINESS OWNER?
I don’t think so but I do think that we, women, don’t have much support which is sad. Like I wish there were more support groups for small business and specifically women.
MY FAVOURITE BUSINESS TOOL IS…
I don’t think I have one yet but for sure Instagram.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…
Stay true to yourself, keep learning and driving forward and don’t judge your success by success of others, everyone’s journey is different.
