TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?

I am the owner of Health Influencers Mastermind as well as Best Holistic Life which is an editorial blog scheduled to be launched in May. I connect “real” experts and influencers in the health and wellness field with my clients and followers. I create a venue where the clients can meet with real experts that have been vetted and personally interviewed by me and connect them to some of my 40,000+ clients and followers who are looking to meet real experts and can find real answers.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?

Eight years ago, I suffered from a life-changing illness. When modern medicine had failed me I was sent home to die. I had a beautiful new grandson at the time and all I could think about is how he would grow up without one single memory of me. I started to fight back and went to the internet in search of holistic options. What I found were tons of self-proclaimed experts selling products. It stole very valuable time from me and built up a wall where even real help couldn’t get through. Now as a holistic coach I am on the other side of that coin. When I meet my clients they are scared, sick and desperate for health answers. Now I have created a space for them to come, where there is absolutely no product promotion. Just the experts chatting with the clients and building a rapport. It has been magical. It has led into a new series of networking books, Oh, My Health.. there is HOPE! And our editorial blog Best Holistic Life, with a podcast where all the experts contribute.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?

I was an interior designer for years, I loved interior design but when you have a business based on billable hours and you are knocked off your feet by illness the money stops rolling in. Eventually, your clients move on to someone else, and you are starting over. I rebuilt my career and life after 50, and it has literally been the best decade of my life.

WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?

No matter what age you currently are if you are starting your own business, be smart. One of the things I learned the hard way is no matter what you do you are the brand. If you create something amazing, I know it’s your baby and you love it and want everyone to know its name. BUT you are the brand! Remember that you will never stop growing.

MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW DID YOU DEALT WITH IT:

Restarting my career after 50 was crazy, and the one thing I struggled with was social media and the internet. I really had no need for those in my interior design business. I was huge in Los Angeles, and you are only targeting with a brick and motor business about a 20-mile radius. With my coaching and health influencers, I am helping people searching on the internet from all over the world. My reach is unstoppable and I can serve so many. I found people doing what I wanted to do and signed up for their courses, reached out to them and got to know them and now a lot of them educate my team for me. When you are building your business, take a minute to look around you. Reach out to other entrepreneurs, together we are powerful, together we are unstoppable! Networking is a powerful thing, helps you build your brand allows you to serve other women entrepreneurs, and learn from them.

MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:

My proudest accomplishment has nothing to do with my work. I am so proud of what I have created in Health Influencers, Best Holistic Life, and our new book Oh, My Health. I love that I am able to serve my clients and help them find real health answers while helping fellow entrepreneurs and coaches connect with clients that really need them and are searching for them.

None of that comes close to the love, and pride I have in my family. 4 grown kids, 2 of my daughters are Doctors of Natural Medicine, another daughter is finishing up her bachelors and my son is living his dream. Now I have 7 grandchildren and after my illness, my priorities shifted. What is important to me now is creating memories with my family and friends. So I spend a lot of my free time doing that exact thing.

HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:

When you are recreating your career after 50 that is one of the perks. You don’t really have all the responsibility you have when you’re raising your children. After almost dying and praying for a second chance. I realized that the statement that “No, one ever on their death bed said they wished they had worked more” was absolutely the truth. I wished for more memories. So the way I balance is I do not work on Wednesday and Sunday, at all! Those are my husbands days. When I am with my kids or grand kids I make sure I am present. No, electronics, nothing but me creating those memories.

I AM INSPIRED BY:

Strong women have always inspired me. My mother was a single mom raising 3 of us for years. Now as a mother I realize what a sacrifice that was for her at the time. I was a single mom at 17, and yet I finished school and went on to college, built several very successful business, failing my way to success.

WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:

I did not choose this career, it chose me. I don’t think any of us as little girls grow up dreaming we are going to be in the health and wellness business. I sure didn’t. Most of the experts and influencers I deal with including myself have a very profound and powerful story that lead them to want to serve others in the way that we are.

HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:

There are a couple of things I do to prepare for success, that keep me on my toes. I read at least 20 minutes each day. I read something that will challenge my mind, and feed my soul. I am constantly educating myself, get more certifications, the more I know the more I can serve.

I set intentions, I rarely just do something without first setting my intention. Why are you doing something? What do you want that outcome to be? If you have a set intention it helps you stay focused and achieve that goal so much quicker and keeps you from going down those rabbit holes.

The other thing I do to prepare for success is to make sure I am always transparent and honest with my clients. If you want to build rapport with someone do not shade the truth or lie to them. My clients need to know I am a human capable of error. That I too, walked in their shoes and there is hope.

DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?

Yes! Sorry I mean HECK YEAH! Remember the setting intentions part of being prepared. I had my granddaughter write a business plan when she told me how many Girl Scout cookies she wanted to sale. That might sound a little over the top, but hopefully, it created a habit for her when she is structuring other business strategies, it helped her understand what setting an intention can do for you and it was fun! Plus she not only hit her goal she exceeded it!

Oh, and best part… We created the most amazing memories together while doing it!

ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMAN BUSINESS OWNER?

There are absolutely very specific advantages and disadvantages for women in business. You need to forget about them all. If you get an advantage you’re one of the lucky ones. I wouldn’t depend on it to be successful though. The disadvantages, changes, be the one to create change for the next woman coming through. Prove them wrong. Remember that next woman trying to break through after you may be your daughters our granddaughters. I have seen so many amazing women fail just inches from achieving there goals and dreams and always! They point the finger at something that went wrong. Or something they expected that didn’t manifest.

You are the magic in your business. Just like you are the protector of your children. If someone came between you and your child would you just give up and walk away? Your dreams should be just as important to you. Do count on the advantages and don’t let the disadvantages stop you from achieving your dreams.

MY FAVOURITE BUSINESS TOOL IS…

I can’t believe I am going to say this but it’s the internet. If Social media is used the right way, it can allow you to reach out to people all around the world. Your voice and message can be heard everywhere. Having said that, with that knowledge comes great responsibility. Remember to always be kind, respectful and honest. Always remember a real person is sitting behind their electronic device on the other side and you can change their life for the good or worse. You represent a powerful group of women who are following your lead. Set the example.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…

Do not give up! I remember exactly where I got this piece of advice. I had struggled to get my health back and started this business to help change the world. Well, to change the world you have to roll down a lot of hills and on the way hit a few rocks. I was sitting in our closet at home crying, I was done. Why was I doing this, I had the money to just sit home and do what I love and be Nana. My husband walked in who has a thriving business of his own, took one look at me and said. Finish up in here, take a deep breath and get back out there. Do Not Give Up!

He also told me to get a thicker skin, if he quit every time someone hurt his feelings we’d be in the poor house now… But the moment for me on the closet floor was better than the hug I thought he was going to give me. Have the support of your partner is incredible.
