Interview with Astrid Beijen

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?

I coach people to achieve a healthier lifestyle. I make them believe in themselves again, give them the knowledge about nutrition, exercise and behaviour, so they can achieve their goals. I do this through eight weeks online coaching program.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?

Last year I ended up completely burn-out at home. Somewhere in this period, I started picking up my former passions, sports and nutrition again. I started to notice how much better I began to feel. From that moment on I knew my mission was to help others feel better (again) through a healthy lifestyle.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?

This is indeed my first business. Before I owned this business I worked as a business unit manager for a recruitment agency.

WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?

Make sure you before you create your business that it really, really fits you and your ideas. Don’t just look at the product or service itself, but also look at your business model and how this will affect your life. You need to have a clear view of how you want your life to be and adjust your business model to this, not the other way around, as I have seen this happen many times.

And also, do what makes you happy. If you want to be an entrepreneur, go for it. Ignore all the insecurities and negative thinking of the surrounding people. If it doesn’t work out, you can always go back, working for a company.

MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW DID YOU DEALT WITH IT:

My greatest obstacle is dealing with the insecurity. Being an entrepreneur is sometimes hard and difficult. You have to know so many things and also it’s completely your own responsibility. Sometimes I find it hard to deal with the insecurities and with setbacks. What really helps me is to put everything in perspective and I do meditations to accomplish this.

MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:

My proudest accomplishment is developing my own coaching program.

HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:

I started off with visualizing how my perfect life would look like and then I developed a business model that suits this life that I visualized. My personal life is and always will be my number one priority. Sometimes it’s hard to mix the two, but to be honest, most of the time it just blends fine.

I AM INSPIRED BY:

I’m mostly inspired by other successful business owners and leaders. Such as Pauline van Eerdenburg of Dutch Girl boss Academy. But also Tony Robbins, Michelle Obama and friends of mine are a big inspiration to me.

WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:

I choose this career because I really want to make a difference and I felt, for me, it was only possible to do this as an entrepreneur. Because now I can really pass forward my vision and help others with my own beliefs.

HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:

Haha, tough question! I’m not sure if you can ever be really prepared for success, but I try to prepare for it by developing clear workflows and processes and also write them down. If I’m ever at a point where I should hire employees it’s clear what they have to do and how I expect them to do it.

DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?

I did write a business plan and it was effective up until some level, but I found that a business plan isn’t just a piece of paper, but something that changes and becomes better and better over time.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMEN BUSINESS OWNER?

In my opinion not really to be honest. I think the most important thing as a business owner is being persistent, have great willpower, being able to deal with setbacks, have a flexible attitude and having a clear thought through a business model that fits your life. You can have all these being a woman, but also as a man.

MY FAVOURITE BUSINESS TOOL IS…

I guess Mailchimp and also Social Media advertising, which I both use a lot as a business tool.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…

Let go of who you think you have to be and choose to be…

Do what truly makes you happy…
