TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?

I am an itinerant beautician. I go around in Berlin offering beauty services to my clients in the comfort of their home, or even in the office when possible. I focus on natural beauty products more than make-up and I use homemade products. I try to live as environmentally friendly as I can.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?

It is quite a common practice in southern Italy to visit the clients at their places but it is tiring and it does not fit everyone’s life choices. I was sure I would have been happy with a 9 to 5 job but I proved myself wrong! So I decided to apply that model to my philosophy and voilà! Kosmetika was born.

“My southern Italian roots. We are passionate, we love to laugh, we love to create and be artsy. We are often told that we have a piece of the sun inside our hearts and I believe that is reflected in how committed we are to who and what we love.”

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?

Kosmetika is not my first business but the one that gave me purpose. I tried a lot of jobs before settling for one, I wanted to be sure my call was in the beauty industry. Before Kosmetika I used to work in gastronomy (and still love food a lot), with kids, years in customer service and some summer jobs in between.

WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?

Check your numbers! It may feel exciting to begin a new adventure, especially one you are passionate about, but life will always knock at your door and finding yourself ready will save you a lot of stress and struggles too. I roughly knew my cost of living and the operational ones for the business. That will keep you stay afloat in hard times and give you the stability you need in the first year to push through ups, downs and a roller coaster of emotions that will arise for sure. Be aware of your situation and evaluate clearly if it’s the right moment or not. A yes/no list will do if you have a lot of doubts!

MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW DID YOU DEALT WITH IT:

The German bureaucracy and tax accountants! Every time I felt like; I figured out how to communicate with them, how to fill the documents or just fill my taxes there were some changes to be made or something I did wrong. It took a while and a lot of effort, but I am in a very good place after one year of struggles.

MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:

The relationships I have grown in these years with my clients. Not only for work but also personally. They have enriched my life and I have theirs.

HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:

I love what I do, and I can do it following my life philosophy which makes it super easy to create a positive circle. I do what I love and I love doing it. My family, partner and friends also are a huge part of this circle as they accept, embrace, support and when needed to criticize my choices, helping me be better as a human which directly affects my relationships with my clients.

I AM INSPIRED BY:

My southern Italian roots. We are passionate, we love to laugh and make laugh, we love to create and be artsy. We are often told that we have a piece of the sun inside our hearts and I believe that is reflected in how committed we are to who and what we love.

WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:

I have always been fascinated by beauty. In nature, art, humans. And after graduating from art school I just continued my research in other fields. Finding what I wanted to do while helping others find theirs (with a bit of help from me).

HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:

I don’t. I never longed for it. I do my best every time for every client. That will always be it. In my work everyone measures and judge success differently. I’d say that for me is having people wanting me and only me serving them.

DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?

Never did and I never planned to do it. I did some market research and some financial planning but no more than that. It would have been different if I planned to open a physical business.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMEN BUSINESS OWNER?

I work with males and females, and they have been both very respectful.

MY FAVOURITE BUSINESS TOOL IS…

My BVG abo. I need to travel around a lot during the day and I use it more than almost anything else.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…

Be kind to me and others. Also, my boyfriend always suggesting me to raise my prices.
