TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?

I help people who want to lose weight. As a nutritionist, I am focused on creating healthy eating habits and I motivate people to exercise regularly. Another important pillar I am working on is mental strength. Basically working from a point of loving yourself, improving where needed and acceptance.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?

During my time as a student, I suffered from extra weight. It took me years and all the different diets and clinics in the world to understand what really worked for me and what I felt can work for everyone. During my time while travelling the world in media and sales, I made a transformational change and I soon became the “go-to” person for everyone who wanted to lose weight or change and improve their eating habits. Ever since I won the battle against overweight it has always been a dream of me to start a weight-loss business. The business idea has always been there because of my personal experience.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?

My first business was in Media and Sales, I had my own production company where we produced promotional documentaries for developing countries. For this business, I lived in Suriname, Malaysia, Brunei, The Philippines, India, Equatorial Guinea and a few more countries where I produced and aired videos.

WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?

I would say if you want to become an entrepreneur but you have no idea yet on how to start, it can be a good idea for you to begin to work for a start-up or medium-sized company where you can get lots of responsibilities and plenty of ways to learn how to get things done. Once you are comfortable becoming an entrepreneur you should then make sure to go into a business you really like, I mean passionately. You need to do something you really love and especially as an entrepreneur. It will be a bumpy ride and only if you really love what you do, you will be able to overcome your challenges and stick until the end. The end meaning the beginning of your successful business.

MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW DID YOU DEALT WITH IT:

During my 9 years as an entrepreneur, I have had lots of obstacles on the road. I have always been brave enough to face them, show up even when it hurts and admit mistakes when needed. I always believed that in the end, the outcome would be “good” if it wasn’t “good” it wasn’t the end…

MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:

One of my clients lost 12 kilos within 4 months, that was amazing, but what I am most proud of is that this same person ran a half-marathon (21 kilometres) 10 months after starting her weight loss program. When she started she was not fit enough to run a small round around her house and that gradually changed leading up to such an amazing achievement.

HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:

I am grateful that I can partly decide my working hours. Having a young family with two small children (4 and 2) makes it important for me that I can be flexible and be there when my kids need me. This means that a lot of times when they are sleeping I am working.

I AM INSPIRED BY:

Other female entrepreneurs who have success stories.

WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:

For years, I had problems with my weight and I struggled. I found the formula that helps with feeling better about yourself and lose weight in the process, that is what I now want to share.

HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:

Practice, practice and practice. Success is the sum of experience and practice. Falling and getting back up again. Success is nothing but practising until you get there.

DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?

Maybe not a traditional business plan, but I did answer the following questions in order to define my goals I wrote the “How”, “Why” and “When” of each objective.  This along with a financial plan makes me very focused on where I want to go and helps me with the decision-making process. I believe it’s important to follow your passion but at the same time, you have to be careful that it doesn’t turn out to be just a hobby. You always have to make sure that you track and trace your finances really well.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMEN BUSINESS OWNER?

One of the advantages is that we women are better at multitasking our personal lives, families and our business while still remaining a great balance between all of it.

MY FAVOURITE BUSINESS TOOL IS…

I love working with ZOOM, Google Docs & Excel

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…

I would like to give a top 3 of my favourite quotes:

  • The way you choose to see the world creates the world you see.

  •  Only I can change my life… (if nothing changes, nothing changes)

  • All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.
