TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING EXACTLY?
I am currently running a digital marketing firm. I offer a number of services such as web design, graphic design, and of course, digital marketing.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IDEA?
Well, I had done so much of this work for myself that I knew it’d be an asset for others!
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS, AND IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?
Before this, I was running a clothing brand that I had started at 17 turning 18. My marketing firm isn’t my first business.
WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?
My advice would be to be prepared to ride the wave! There are so many ebbs and flows when it comes to the hustle. I can’t count how many times I have wanted to quit out of frustration and just being impatient. Take your time and it will all come full circle.
MY GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HOW DID YOU DEALT WITH IT:
My greatest obstacle in life really was giving myself the courage to go my own way despite what others thought I should have done. I come from a family of people who believe in working the secure 9 to 5 until you can’t anymore, and that’s never been my deal. I had to block out all of the noise and embark on this journey to financial freedom despite the fear. I had to push myself.
MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:
My proudest accomplishment is simply being an entrepreneur. I am the first person in my family to work for themselves and it is so rewarding to have sparked the introduction of a new path to my younger siblings and loved ones.
HOW I BLEND LIFE AND WORK TO CREATE THE LIFE I WANT:
I’m what they call a workhorse, so my work is the bulk of my life. I’m working on giving myself permission to have more leisure time, though! The best thing about what I do is being able to just grab my laptop and go. No clocking in or out, no PTO, or anything. I just go with the flow.
I AM INSPIRED BY:
Other women! I love seeing other women win in their own right no matter how big or small. It just feels good to know that so many ladies are stepping in their power. I’m always in awe when a woman DMs me and says, “Sierra, I quit the job. I’m about to do this thing.” or “I’m currently working at a job, but I’m creating the blueprint to have my own business now.” I’m always like, “You go, girl!” Whether you’re in love with your 9 to 5 or now, I respect all of the women who are taking on the world in whatever way they feel is necessary.
WHY I CHOSE THIS CAREER:
I chose this path because I feel that I’ve always stuck out like a sore thumb. I’ve always been a leader. In my earlier years of high school, it kind of just clicked for me that I wanted to run and build businesses. I felt inspired by what I saw on social media and in my own life. The neighbourhood that I’m from is not the nicest, and so I believe it played a huge part in my success. My circumstances really pushed me to lift myself up out of the struggle.
HOW I PREPARE FOR SUCCESS:
I always sit down and set goals. Whether it’s on a planner or my whiteboard in my office, I am always writing things down. This really helps me get laser-focused on all of my tasks at hand. On Sundays, I always sit down and plan out my week. I ask myself, “What are you trying to accomplish? Where are you trying to go?” The answer to those questions will serve as a tool for how my week is going to go. I usually stress being productive versus being busy.
DID YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? WAS IT AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR YOU?
I’ll be honest, I have never written a business plan ever. I am a “dive in head first” type of woman. I still don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing. I always have a real plan in mind when I’m working on a venture. Sometimes, it doesn’t need to be a super formal business plan. Sometimes it just takes a strong mindset and some execution to back it up.
ARE THERE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES TO BEING A WOMEN BUSINESS OWNER?
Not to my knowledge. I think that some women deal with the issue of men maybe not taking them as seriously in business. However, since my target market and clients are usually women, I don’t have that problem.
MY FAVOURITE BUSINESS TOOL IS…
The internet. There are so many opportunities and we don’t even know it!
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS…
Do not attempt to reinvent the wheel. Make the wheel you’ve got just a little bit better.
